Review & Giveaway : Cookie Dough From Ice Box Bakery

logo_med

I am always on the look out for a yummy treat for my little ones.  With their sensitivity to food dyes and preservatives it is often a challenge to find things they enjoy that I can feel good about giving them. Ice Box Bakery has given parents a wonderful alternative to traditional slice and bake cookies. Their amazing selection of yummy goodies includes cookies like Old Time Peanut Butter, Double Dutch Chocolate, Tart Cherry Pie, and Classic Sugar Cookies just to name a few. They also have a super delicious Gluten Free Chocolate Chip cookie for those who have specialized diets.label_gf_lg

Jen Bush, founder of Ice Box Bakery, had her first daughter in 2000 and soon after began looking for an alternative to the mass of sweets on the market made with inferior ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, palm oil, and hydrogenated fats. She soon realized that she would not find what she was looking for in today’s market and instead she began to make her own. Working as a pastry chef at the time, Jen began offering her yummy, healthy cookie dough in among the other amazing creations in her pastry case. It was a huge hit and soon after Ice Box Bakery was born.

Here’s a little more of her story:

Founded in Boulder in 2007, Ice Box Bakery all-natural cookie dough is made from scratch in small batches, quick-wrapped to ensure “fresh from the mixing bowl” flavor, and sold ready to slice and bake. Using only premium, all-natural ingredients, including real creamery butter, pure cane sugar, and pure vanilla, Ice Box Bakery cookie dough is available in seven delicious, old fashioned flavors and sold in the refrigerated section at Whole Foods Market and other fine natural and specialty food stores throughout the U.S.

At Ice Box Bakery, we want to bring wholesome sweetness to everyone’s life, in ways both big and small. We work to achieve this mission by not only family_polaroidcreating great products for families to enjoy together, but also aligning our company with great causes. Since our founding in 2007, through a commitment to volunteering, contributions, and on-going donations, we have partnered with There With Care (http://www.therewithcare.org/), an organization dedicated to easing the burden of families with critically ill children.

We were recently given the opportunity to try some of Ice Box Bakery’s yummy creations, Double Dutch Chocolate, Old Time Peanut Butter, and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip. They arrived packaged in a neat little freezer box and were still very frozen upon arrival (in our current 100+ degree weather, amazing). We wanted to dive right in, but we decided to wait a few days and bake them up for a dinner party we were having at our home.

The day of the party we simply took them out of the refrigerator, sliced and baked them- so easy. Our home smelled so delicious when our guests arrived. We offered them around the table after dinner and the response was great- everyone loved them. They were rich and delicious- they truly tasted homemade. Our guests were very surprised when I told them these cookies were not made by hand that day. They truly couldn’t believe they were slice and bake. I loved that I got to share such a wonderful treat with my friends and they took so little effort to make.

Review & Giveaway : You’re Not The Boss Of Me : Brat-Proofing Your 4- To 12-Year-Old Child

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

you'renotthebossofme

ISBN-13: 9780061346637

ISBN: 0061346632

When the good people of AJG first contacted me for a review, I had my interest piqued just seeing the title of this book You’re Not The Boss of Me : Brat Proofing Your 4- To 12-Year-Old Child. I have a 5 year old and  a 10 year old who are a constant challenge to me, so this book was certainly right down my alley. I was all pumped up to see what I could learn from well-known parent educator and author, Betsy Brown Braun.

I skipped the first few pages of  testimonials provided in the book as I didn’t want my judgement to be clouded by these positive reviews. I like that the author recommended the book NOT to be read in one sitting but instead, to begin with the first chapter “Did You Hear Me?  : How to talk to your kids”. I wondered which mom had the luxury of time to finish a book in one session anyway. As suggested, it was certainly more practical to flip to the chapters which matters most to each individual reader.

For me, it was Chapter 4.  “Where’s My Jacket?” sounded like it was written for me to address the issue with my absent minded son. You see….each day, after school, he goes straight to his tuition centre for lunch, a bath and then tuition. He stashes his dirty uniform and socks in a bag to bring home but lately, he has been coming home either without his socks OR with only ONE sock OR with one side that does not belong to him! It has become such an irritating habit that I find myself constantly nagging at him for not being responsible.

In Chapter 4, Betsy Brown Braun highlighted that a parent can be the saboteur to their very own child’s development of responsibility. Very often, out of impatience or due to lack of time, I had helped my daughter or son to do the tasks that they were supposed to do themselves.  Guilty as charged :(   This was something I have to work at. It was a small but essential step to guiding my children to become more responsible. Betsy Brown Braun was not only able to demonstrate that she understood my plight but she also gave concrete advice about how to deal with it.

I must also compliment Betsy on the fact that she never talks down to you. With some other books that I had finished reading, they seemed to convince  me that I’m a bad mother that needs to change. I never got that idea from this book.  Instead, Betsy explained things as they really are. Sometimes children play up but there are things you can do to fix this.  I expect that I’ll be dipping in and out of this book in the future as I enjoyed how how easy it was to use this book as a reference. You will also find tips and examples in each section of the book, telling you how to effectively implement the strategies that was taught.

BUY IT : I would happily recommend You’re Not The Boss Of Me : Brat-Proofing Your 4- To 12-Year-Old Child to any parent. You’ll not be disappointed.

WIN IT : We’re giving away a copy of You’re Not The Boss Of Me : Brat-Proofing Your 4- To 12-Year-Old Child to one lucky reader. If you’re looking for a parenting resource that really works, this is one book you must not miss. To enter for a chance to win, just follow the requirements below:

Review & Giveaway : Kodak Sports Single Use Camera

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

0900688a80bae598_EKN026337_front_645x370

Kodak recently sent me one of their Sports Single Use Camera, and I honestly have to say this, it felt so old school. It’s been awhile since I held one of these disposable cameras, it was wayyy before I had babies. *chuckles*

Anyway, these cameras are pretty handy to have when you have kids, because they can now take the pictures for you. It’s very durable, with it’s rubber shell casing, so that’s why I don’t worry if they ever drop the camera. Also, because it’s waterproof, there’s nothing wrong with them, taking it to the waters whenever they liked. I have to say, the boys had a lot of fun with it, taking all 25 photos, leaving none for me.

snowman1Although most people would associate such cameras to be used only under water, I have to say, you can use it for ANY outdoor occasion, where there is a lot of action. It may be summertime in US, but it’s winter right where I am! So, we recently had the opportunity to go up to the mountains for some fun snow play! The camera was so light, it wasn’t as bothersome to carry, as oh! say, a DSLR! The fact that it dropped onto the snow so many times, and still managed to capture great memories, was fantastic! Proved it’s durability over and over again!

Buy It! : Kodak’s Sports Single Use Camera is available only at US$11.99 at most retailers near you. You can also get it online here. It is waterproofed up to 50 feet, great for the enthusiastic snorkelers. Also, highly resistant to sunscreen smudges and scratches from sand and snow! Just remember this camera needs lots of sunshine, so your photos will be as vibrant as you will remember it to be.

Win it! : US Readers are real lucky, as Kodak is offering 1 Sports Single Use Camera as a giveaway! This will be a great way of capturing your summer vacation! Or rather, for your kids to do the work, for once. Here’s how :

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

hmn

HMN-AARON-1There is nothing as special as giving a gift to someone personalized with their own name. I love finding gifts to give the special little ones in my life that are special and “just for them”. I was very excited when I was recently given the opportunity to review the new Hooray My Name Activity DVD. This great, personalized and interactive DVD provides children with 8 fun and educational activities that teach letters, numbers, colors, animals, and much more. My children were both thrilled to receive copies of the Hooray My Name DVD with their own names on them. Although the DVD’s are geared for a slightly younger audience, my children thoroughly enjoyed the fact that “Jack and Rocco” knew their names and were talking directly to them. The activities on the Hooray My Name Activity DVD are cute and entertaining with bright colors, clear graphics and fun educational activities. Including a child’s personal name is a great way to keep their attention and the great concept of these DVD’s combines fun and learning and is sure to please.

About Hooray My Name Activity DVD:

logo-footerAt Hooray My Name, we recognized that with all the amazing assortment of educational content available to children, one thing was missing when it came to television and DVD entertainment – a personalized connection to the content. Inspired by many of our friends children, our soon to be born daughter and our adopted Boxer, Rocco, we set out to create a series of activities that not only provided entertaining educational content, but would also engage each child on a more personal level by incorporating their name. Considering a child’s first form of identity is established through their name, it’s our feeling, at Hooray My Name, that by combining educational content while incorporating a child’s name, children are much more likely to be engaged in the material presented.

Buy It! : The Hooray My Name Activity DVD can be purchased for the little ones in your life by visiting their website. But you can preview the activities on the Hooray My Name Activity DVD here.

The key to anyone’s heart (not just a man) is food. We seek comfort and nourishment in food and it’s so much fun to “break bread” with our friends and family. I had a chance to share with my family a huge jar of delicious chicken soup courtesy of a little company in Florida called A Spoonful of Comfort. It came in a box right to my door complete with dinner rolls and it came at a great time since I am in the early stages of pregnancy and I just don’t have the energy to cook!

free-gift-packagingA Spoonful of Comfort was begun back in 2007 by Marti Bowes Wymer when she was losing her dear mother to cancer. The idea of sending chicken soup – something that everyone from an ailing friend or family member to a homesick college student could find comfort in – was born.

A jar of homemade chicken soup from A Spoonful of Comfort is the perfect gift when you just don’t know what to send. It is also such a thoughtful and unique gift, it’s bound to send a little sunshine to those receiving it.

BUY IT : You can purchase your own homemade jar of chicken soup from the A Spoonful of Comfort website! You can even choose to include homemade dinner rolls or homemade oatmeal raisin cookies with your order.bread

Review & Giveaway : Sand Gone

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

Love the Beach sandgone2

We love our beaches. Every year, without fail, I will pack up our beach tent, beach towels, beach toys (actually, most of them are already pre-packed and ready to go), prepare a scrumptious picnic and pack it all into the trunk of our car. It’s almost like a pilgrimage to us, we just love our beaches. I’ll try my best to bring friends along as well, since we have an 8 seater..and all of them, are the considerate sort of people. They’d apologise for bringing sand into my car. Well, I have three boys… with or without my friends, I’d still have sand somehow. Thanks to the numerous sand-pits they play in. So, when I was told about “Sand Gone”, I was a happy girl again.

About Sand Gone :
A great new beach product “Sand Gone”. This amazing dry powder that when applied to sandy parts of you body removes the sand leaving your skin soft and smooth. A must for beachgoers! Sand Gone has recently launched a new Hygiene/Beauty Product to take Beach Lovers and Tanning/Cosmetic industry by Sand Storm ! It is called SAND GONE, a simple sand-removal product that comes in powder form wit a gentle, soft powder puff for smooth, easy application. Founded by housewife, mother, and entrepreneur Tiffany Smith, who also invented SAND GONE, her company is officially launching this month in central Florida, with the aim of going national over the next several months. Tiffany also reminds people that SAND GONE is not only non-toxic and non-talc, and easy to apply and use, but also smells good, feels good, is inexpensive and does a thorough, wonderful job each and every time. “It makes the ride home from the beach as clean and comfortable as the ride there.” She adds, “I want my invention to become one of those must-haves at the beach or at any sandlot in the park. You will know to bring your sunblock and shades…but also your SAND GONE

sandgoneBuy It! : Sand Gone is an absolute winner! Why? It is so simple to apply on, just puff puff puff the powder on sandy areas..and the sand just slides off, leaving the skin smelling coconut-y and feeling smooooooooth! Honestly, my kids don’t feel as icky anymore, as they jump into the car. They used to whine about the sand being stuck on them. And I’m happy because it doesn’t mean I have to vacuum my car everytime we go to the beach or come back from the sandpit!

Win It! : One very lucky reader will have a chance in winning a tub of 8oz Sand Gone and all you have to do is :

  • One Mandatory Entry- visit the SandGone website and tell us why you would like a tub!

Review & Giveaway : My Virtual Tutor

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

my-virtual-tutor-logo

Wow!!  “My Virtual Tutor: Reading”, created for Nintendo DS, is a wonderful, educational “game” that encourages fluency, comprehension, vocabulary building, and reading skills advancement.  It sounds almost too good to be true- but it’s not.  I was recently given the opportunity to review this great new product and I have to say I am truly amazed.
xx
mvt-k-1My children are ones who love to play video games and although we strictly monitor the time they spend playing them, a product such as My Virtual Tutor: Reading takes much of the worry out of that idle play time on the DS. My Virtual Tutor: Reading, created by Mentor InterActive, is a children’s educational game that concentrates on five reading areas including Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary- all recommended by the Department of Education to improve reading proficiency.xx

My daughter, age 5, is one of the most advanced readers in her kindergarten class. We chose to review the Kindergarten through 1st grade version of My Virtual Tutor: Reading, and it was a bit of a challenge for her. The game itself is fabulous with great graphics and a wonderful, clear voice directing the game. Each version includes eight interactive books with four modes of play:

  • Read to Me- Virtual tutor reads the story with exciting animation
  • I Can Read- Beginning vocabulary word-based activities
  • Interactive- Clickable animations with interactive quizzes to test reading and vocabulary comprehension
  • Paint- Unleash creativity and illustrate scenes while listening to a story.
We started with the first book, Underwater, and went through all four modes of play.  My daughter very much enjoyed each of them, but the interactive mode held her attention the longest.  During parts of the story, a line from the book is read out loud and then a recorder mode allows the child to read the same line aloud, record their own voice, and then replay to check for accuracy.  This was by far her favorite part- she loved being able to hear her own voice reading the story.
xx
In addition to the storybooks their are also Phonics mini-games and quizzes to help with reading comprehension and word knowledge. The Parent Mode allows parents to monitor book progress and see their child’s aptitude in the phonics games. It helps parents track the progress their children are making while “playing” their video game.
We loved “My Virtual Tutor: Reading” and would recommend it to any parent whose child loves video games and is a beginning reader. It is available for purchase in Pre-K, K-1st, and 1st-2nd grades, allowing consistency as your child advances from level to level.

Buy It! “My Virtual Tutor: Reading” for the Nintendo DS is available at mass and specialty retailers such as Toys R’ Us, GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon.com.

Win It! We have been given one copy of “My Virtual Tutor: Reading” to share with one of our lucky readers.  Here’s how to enter:

  • One Mandatory Entry- visit the My Virtual Tutor website and try the demo version.  Leave us a comment telling us what you enjoyed about it.
  • Two Additional Entries- Follow us on twitter and tweet this giveaway.  Please leave an additional comment including your twitter id and your tweet url.
  • Five Additional Entries- Read one of our Parenting Articles.  Leave a comment about it on the post and return here to leave a comment including the article’s URL.
  • Giveaway open to US shipping addresses only.
  • This product is for use with Nintendo DS (US region only), which is not supplied.
  • Giveaway ends 3rd May 2010 and a winner will be picked using Random.org. We will not be emailing winners, so please make sure you subscribe to our feed or check back here for the winner announcement post.

Review & Giveaway : Robby Wash System

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

3487290010013-2T

Laundry is not my favorite chore- in fact with the multiple loads I have to do daily- it is pretty low on my list of things I like to do.  I am always on the lookout for new products that make this chore faster and easier.  Thanks to Parent Reviewers I was recently given the opportunity to review a great new product- well a new to me product.

Robby Wash is a great alternative laundry detergent product that has been used in Europe for years. It is third party tested, proven and guaranteed to clean better than traditional powder laundry detergent.

Sounds good right?  Well it’s better than good- it is also eco-friendly, hypoallergenic and made with no harsh chemicals.  In fact it is often used in Europe for baby laundry- safe and effective.  This fact was extremely important to me as my youngest child has very sensitive skin and often reacts harshly to even the gentlest detergents.

I was given the opportunity to try Robby Wash for myself and I must say I am amazed. The Robby Wash system includes two plastic balls filled with Robby Wash laundry detergent. The blue ball is recommended for use with hot or cold washing loads while the fuchsia ball is recommended for use with cold water/colored clothing.

I was a bit skeptical at first, but once I washed our first load (white towels) with the blue Robby Wash ball I was hooked. The towels came out clean, fresh, and with a wonderful, very light scent. I was equally as pleased with the results of the fuchsia Robby Wash ball- no fading on our bright colored clothes and the same amazing results.

Most importantly, my children had no trouble with the clothing that was washed using the Robby Wash balls.  There was no skin irritation or itching- simply soft, sweet smelling clothing.  I was truly impressed.

In addition to its great cleaning power, Robby Wash is also extremely environmentally friendly- 10 ounces of Robby Wash can replace 75 pounds of traditionalimages-1 laundry detergent and Robby Wash detergent last for up to 12 months.  At a price of $32.95 per Robby Ball, you can easily save hundreds of dollars a year on laundry detergent.

Although laundry is still not high on my list of things I like to do, Robby Wash has made it much easier, faster, and more financially friendly.  I am hooked on Robby Wash and know I will be using it for many years to come.

Here’s even more great reasons to buy Robby Wash Balls:

Review and Giveaway : Teach Your Child the Multiplication Tables, Fun, Fast and Easy with Dazzling Patterns, Grids and Tricks!

GIVEAWAY CLOSED!

Growing up, I was never really good at Maths. Until, I had the benefit of getting to know an excellent Maths teacher, who showed me the good side of Maths. It was astounding. I never thought Maths could be so interesting and from then on, each time I found a pattern or a sequence, Maths got easier and easier. I have to say, by the time I ended High School, the only thing I really excelled in, was Maths (and English ~ but that didn’t count somehow).

Now, as a parent, I have to admit, I really suck at teaching Maths. Perhaps I’m too impatient with my kids and think ahead of myself. The easy stuff like Addition and Subtraction was taught with much frustration, on my part, and much dismay, on my kids’ part.  I dreaded the idea of teaching Multiplication and Division! When the book “Teach Your Child the Multiplication Tables, Fun, Fast and Easy with Dazzling Patterns, Grids and Tricks“, arrived, I looked at the front cover with much skepticism. How “fun” could it be?

I completely forgot how amazing it is, when the brain opens up, finds a pattern and starts working furiously at the numbers. Until this book arrived. My 7 year old saw this book and immediately wanted to work on it. I knew he learnt some multiplications at school, but I wasn’t sure how much.

He attacked the first grid….working all the multiplication numbers from 1 to 10. Just like that. I was amazed. He had read and glossed over the book, (I assumed he was just looking at the pictures) earlier…and when he started doing the numbers, he seemed to understand the underlying patterns under each multiplication.

And here I thought I would have a hard time teaching him the Multiplication!

About : The book starts with a story about a Circus in mayhem. The Ringmaster needs the child’s help in counting his animals, but it would take too long to count them, one by one. One needs the magic of multiplication to help him account for all his animals!

Eugenia Francis created this fun, colorful and imaginative way of working with numbers. She spent 15 years developing creative teaching materials. She taught both high school and university students (University of California at Irvine) and mentored other teachers. She received a B.A. and an M.A. in literature from Southern Methodist University and has done graduate work at UCI. Faced with the challenge of teaching her son the multiplication tables, she developed her own innovative method, discovering patterns and tricks to the multiplication tables.

This book also works very well for children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Patterns provide structure.  Children with ADD/ADHD need structure. These children have a difficulty memorizing the times tables.  The visual-spatial method of patterns and grids works better.  Patterns also help dyslexic children as they strictly order number sequence.  Special needs children can better visualize and recall where a number is placed if they see a pattern.  Do check out her blog for any updates or tips!

Buy It : There are also other versions, the Teacher’s version and the Spanish version. Wipe-off Learning Aids are also available. The books are available on Amazon, while the books and the Learning Aids are available at Eugenia’s website.

Win It : Goody! Here’s the fun part : 7 very lucky readers will have a chance in winning this. All you have to do is :

  • One entry – Visit www.teachildmath.com and tell us, how old was the author’s son when she decided to create an innovative way of doing the multiplication tables.
