This time, my boys reviewed the “Handy Manny Motorcycle Adventure” DVD. So, it was natural that they told me, what it was all about and whether or not they liked it.

According to them, Handy Manny and his tools plans to go on a road trip back for a family reunion. But, Pat the Hammer, decides to go on a search for his own family, and as a result, Handy Manny and the rest of the tools, take a detour to look for Pat, Squeeze and Flicker, and goes through a great adventure. As they cruise along the trip, they make pit stops, helping out everyone along the way, fixing and mending things, AND gets helped in return!

They find Pat, Squeeze and Flicker at the end, and Handy Manny gets to reunite with his family.

Buy It! : My boys loved it. Then again, they’ve been fans of Handy Manny for a long time, and always loved fixing things. There’s always the singing, which is highly entertaining, and of course, adventure! Lots of it in this full-length movie! I thought it was great because it emphasized the importance of family, and the support and unconditional love we get from family. When Pat couldn’t locate his family of hammers, the other tools rally around and reassure him that they are all his family. Personally to me, this was really cool, because I feel that we don’t have to born into a family, to be a family. This DVD is set to be released on April 6th 2011, in Australia.

I had the privilege to review “Reena’s Bollywood Dream : A Story about Sexual Abuse” by Jewel Kats, and illustrated by Richa Kinra. After years of exchanging letters, 8 year old “Reena” is delighted to finally meet her “Uncle Jessi”, who, migrated from India to US and is staying with her family. “Reena” dreams about being a bollywood star, but her parents had higher hopes of her being a doctor. With “Uncle Jessi” ‘s arrival, he brings her gifts and a new Bollywood movie. Luring the young girl to his room whilst her parents are out, with a secret surprise, it slowly turns into a complete nightmare for “Reena”.

Buy it! : While the storyline captures a family from a different culture, the underlying message is clear. A child needs to understand that sexual abuse is never their fault. Sharing how they feel with an adult, will not only stop the abuser, but it helps them recover in a safe way. We always have a fear that a stranger is the main offender, but most often than not, sexual predators/abusers are close members/friends of the family. This is a great introductory book to any child, to provide awareness on this subject.

Mom2BBreviews : As a parent, I learned something new in the book too! Did you know that we have a “sympathetic nervous system” ? It’s like a switch in our body which gets turned on when we feel that we are in danger.

Atomic Mama : I enjoyed this book a LOT when it came to teaching Xander about anxiety and ways to deal with it. The author uses a story about dinosaurs to break down anxiety in easy to understand ways.

Almanac Queen : As soon as she finished reading it, she started relating to me the story and managed to identify all the important educational points for sexual education for someone as young as her. I think this book is very important for young girls who may be reaching puberty soon.

Pookie and the Boys : She keeps it very basic with steps on how to explain it to the child without causing immediate panic. I wasn’t worried about my son panicking, I was worried about me! I got ideas on how to approach the subject with him, pep talks for use prior to the surgery , all the way up to days before and the day of surgery.

Moomettes Magnificents : This is an informative reference source for parents, grandparents or daycare providers to sooth a child’s fears before undergoing surgery for a Tonsillectomy or Adenoidectomy.

So- I have to admit I am not the most technologically advanced Mama on the block.  In fact, I had a flip phone until just a few weeks ago.  Imagine my surprise when my sweet husband brought home an actual smart phone for me- one that has internet, email, and so many apps it makes my head spin.  I have always considered myself one of the smarter people on the planet- at least until I tried to use a “smart phone”.  They have a way of bringing you down a few notches on the smart scale!!
